Autonomous driving technology is quite sure to be the future of automobiles where cars won’t equip steering wheel, pedals and brakes. Apart from Tesla’s semi-autonomous driving tech, there aren’t any mainstream cars integrated with fully automated driving modes and that won’t last any longer. GM’s upcoming 2018 Cadillac CT6 will be the first car from the company to equip highly automated hands-free Super Cruise, a technology that will allow drivers to take their hands off during highway driving.
How Cadillac Super Cruise Works?
Unlike Tesla’s new Autopilot versions which require drivers to keep their hands on the wheel, Cadillac says Super Cruise is “the industry’s first true hands-free driving technology.” Tesla updated their Autopilot after a couple of accidents reported where drivers slept on the back seat during highway driving. Though Cadillac’s Super Cruise is claimed as the true hands-free driving, drivers will need to remain seated behind the wheels. The Super Cruise technology comprises of infrared camera on the steering wheel, sensors and mapping data. The camera will monitor the driver’s attention and of the driver uses phone or didn’t pay attention to the road, it will start beeping or even bring the car to controlled stop.
Besides cameras, sensors and GPS, Cadillac CT6 will be the first production car to use LIDAR mapping data for accurate mapping. It will provide accurate information based on the mapping data recorded by other LIDAR installed vehicles. This will tell drivers where to use and not to use the Super Cruise driving mode, which is available on divided, limited-access highways with clear entrance and exit ramps
“While it is technically possible for the technology to drive hands-free on other kinds of streets and roads, we feel strongly that this targeted approach is the best to build consumer and regulatory confidence and enthusiasm for advanced mobility,” said Barry Walkup, chief engineer on Super Cruise, in a statement.
2018 Cadillac CT6 Price
Cadillac Super Cruise is as expensive as Tesla’s Autopilot for which customers have to pay an additional $2,500 over the luxury ($66,290) and platinum ($85,290) trims. It will be available only in these two variants and customers have to shell out $3,100 for driver assist system on luxury trims. The exterior of 2018 Cadillac CT6 appears similar to that of the 2017 CT6 but inside it gets a host of new features, specially Super Cruise technology and other improvements. Just like Tesla’s Autopilot, Cadillac’s Super Cruise can be updated over the air.
