The Witcher

TV fans out there would be thrilled on learning that Netflix is making an English-language television series based on the best-selling novel The Witcher by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. There are a total of eight novels with the same theme called as The Witcher Saga and all of them were penned by Sapkowski, which became popular after they were adapted into video games.

Netflix will be developing and producing the series under the same name with Sapkowski serving as the creative consultant. “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing,” he stated in a press release. “I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”

It was previously said that the fantasy series will be made into a movie and will be released in 2017, but it looks like the idea was scrapped in favour of the television series. Sean Daniel, who was earlier accompanied to produce the movie, will produce the series for Netflix.

Executive producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown (The Expanse), said: “The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

Filmmaker Tomek Baginski, Oscar-nominated director for animated short film “The Cathedral” and also who directed the intros of the three Witcher games, has been attached to the series along with Jarek Sawko. A polish studio Platige Image, which worked on the CGI intros for the Witcher games will also co-produce the series.

“There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and hero inside of all our hearts,” Baginski and Sawko said during the press release.

There’s no word on casting or release date either. Further details about the show will be revealed in near future.
