Today is the third day of Navratri, an auspicious Hindu festive, predominantly celebrated in India and Nepal. Navratri is devoted to Goddess Durga which lasts for 10 days and 9 nights where people worship the nine different forms of Goddess Devi Durga.

The Navratri festival is geared up across the country and takes various forms of celebration. It’s a colourful festival where the Devi Durga is decorated with flowers in nine different forms, one for each day, throughout the festival. The Goddess Durga will appear in nine forms – Hailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhidatri.

History of Navratri and Devi Durga

This year Navratri is celebrated from October 1 to October 11. The dates changes depending on the lunar calendar. The last day (10th day) is called as Vijayadashami or Dussehra is an important day in Navratri where Ravana is defeated by Lord Rama. The nine nights of Navratri marks the battle between Devi Durga and demon Mahishasura and on the ninth day Shakti beheaded Mahishasura.

There are several myths behind this festival and Diwali is celebrated after twenty days of Navratri. There are five types of Navaratris — Vasantha Navratri (around March-April), Ashad Navratri (around June-July), Sharad Navratri (around September-October), Pausha Navratri (around December-january) and Magha Navratri (around January-February), of which Sharad Navratri is famous and celebrated through the country.

In South India, People used to decorate their houses with dolls of various Gods exhibiting on a formation of wooden nine steps, called a Bommai Kolu. Durga Pooja is celebrated by Bengalis during the Navratris. People of India celebrate Navratri as per their tradition followed by generations.
