Hyperkin Lab, last year teased a gaming console that would allow you to play real Game Boy cartridges on your smartphone. Now this becomes true with the company launching the Smart Boy, an add-on for Android phones that will enable users to play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advanced cartridges on their phone.
There’s an Atmel 90USB646 chip inside it. The device is compatible with phones running Android 4.4.4 KitKat and above with USB OTG support. The Smart Boy will have an open source serial app and firmware. Hyperkin will also be offering a royalty percentage for developers who help improve its app and firmware.
This $60 peripheral is expected to ship by December 2016. It’s not offering support for iPhones, so Apple users have to wait a little long to revive their childhood memories, and are that fact that playing Game Boy games would be a different thing.
