At least 2 passengers were dead and 48 others were injured in a yet another misfortunate train derailment accident on Wednesday. The Sealdah- Ajmer Express derailed near Rura area in Kanpur district in Uttar Pradesh.
The accident took place at 5:20 AM on Wednesday in between Rura – Metha area which is 50 kms from Kanpur. As many as 14 compartments were derailed causing serious rail traffic, and many passengers were feared injured in the accident.
“The 15 waggons of the Sealdah-Ajmer express train 12988 derailed in the wee hours,” a Kanpur Rail division official here said.
Rescue and relief unites were rushed to the spot and carried out by railway departments and district administrations. Rescue operation is happening and passengers were being rescued. Railway officials said that alternate arrangements were being made for those passengers who want to continue their journey.
Several trains have been diverted following the mishap; emergency toll-free numbers were announced by the railway authorities to make enquiries.
The exact reason for the derailment is uncertain. Senior officials have been directed to reach the accident site immediately, Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said, adding immediate medical help is being provided to the injured.
Thorough investigation will be carried out to ascertain the cause, he added.
