Nvidia has revealed the successor of the Drive PX in-car computer which debuted last year, called the Drive PX2. It claims Nvidia Drive PX2 is the world’s most powerful engine for in-vehicle artificial intelligence.

The liquid-cooled in-car Nvidia Drive PX2 has a power equivalent to 150 MacBooks Pros. With its 12 CPU cores, it can perform 8 trillion operations per second (teraflops), and 24 trillion deep learning operations per second. It is designed especially for powering the self-driving cars.

“We aren’t realizing the full potential of our vision unless we can solve city driving,” Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA’s CEO said. “Bikers are in the same road you are… People are sometimes following the rules and most times not… It’s very chaotic and very hard.”

Huang says it is the first supercomputer made for cars with such insane specs. The Drive PX 2 houses two Tegra SoCs and two Pascal GPUs said to deliver 10 times the processing power as the Drive PX.

“Drivers deal with an infinitely complex world,” said Huang. “Modern artificial intelligence and GPU breakthroughs enable us to finally tackle the daunting challenges of self-driving cars. “[…] We are leveraging these to create the brain of future autonomous vehicles that will be continuously alert, and eventually achieve superhuman levels of situational awareness.”

The Nvidia Drive PX2 also features 360-degree situational awareness around the car. Powering the car with this supercomputer enables it to address all possible interferences such as bad weather, road debris, constructions zones and more.

The Nvidia Drive PX2 will be made available to its partners in the second quarter. Nvidia claims that over 50 automakers, suppliers, developers, and institutions adopted its Drive PX platform that was introduced in March this year.
