In a bid to tackle the competition from incumbent telecom operators, the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has launched a new plan (New Year Plan) which offers unlimited local and STD voice calling at just Rs. 144 per billing cycle.

Reliance Jio made revolution in Telecom industry by offering free voice calling and data through its promotional “Happy New Year Offer” till March 31, 2017. Other telecom incumbents, including Airtel, Vodafone and Idea have also came up with similar offers letting their customers avail unlimited calling at affordable rates.

As per BSNL new plan, customers can avail unlimited local and STD calling to any network for a period of one month with additional 300MB of free data. This plan is applicable for prepaid and postpaid users which is valid for 6 months.

The telecom service provider was also taking up several initiatives, including the launch of 4,400 WiFi hotspots across the country. “We have 4,400 WiFi hotspots launched countrywide. I think in Mahabalipuram near Chennai has a similar WiFi hotspots. Our immediate strategy is to expand this. In next one year, we will be having around 40,000 WiFi Hotspots across the country,” he said.

The company will soon launch classic LTE (Long Term Evolution, or 4G) spectrum in a phased rollout. They have recently secured a licence for the 2500MHz spectrum band from the central government. With Jio launching its commercial services from 1st April, we can expect aggressive offers from telecom operators in the coming months.
