Xiaomi today unveiled its much-anticipated flagship, the Mi 5 smartphone at the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona. Besides, the Mi 5, the company has also revealed the Mi 4S smartphone. The company says that the Mi 5 will come in three variants – the standard one with 3GB DDR4 RAM and 32GB internal storage starts at a price tag of CNY 2000 ($306), the 64GB variant with 3GB DDR4 RAM secures CNY 2300 ($352) and lastly, the Mi 5 Pro with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage goes all the way up to CNY 2700 ($413).
As previously claimed, Xiaomi is touting Mi 5 as the first smartphone to hit the market with the Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 820 chipset, however, LeEco’s Me Max featuring Snapdragon 820 Chipset is already on sale in China and, it is hitting the Indian space on February 25 through open sale via Flipkart.
Inspired from Mi Note, Xiaomi’s flagship Mi 5 boasts a trendy curved design on the back while the standard version will have a glass back, the premium version will feature a ceramic glass on the back. The Mi 5 features a 5.15-inch IPS 1080p display that has 16-LED backlighting and the Sunlight Display tech is upgraded as well. The phone measures 69.20 x 144.55 x 7.25mm, seems to be a tad thicker than the Mi Note. However, the company says, the Mi 5 is about 14 grams lighter than the 5.5-inch iPhone 6s, tipping the scale at 129 grams.
Powering the handset is the Snapdragon 820 SoC coupled with Adreno 530 GPU. Designed purely with the intention of delivery speed, the handset is backed by 3GB or 4GB of fast LDDR4 RAM along with the fast storage that goes up to 128GB from 32GB of UFS 2.0 memory.
The Mi 5 sports an impressive 16MP on the back with an aperture of f/2.0 and 4-axis optical image stabilization. It employs Sony IMX 298 sensor which comes with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and deep trench isolation (DTI) technology. It can record videos with 4K resolution and on the front, the device picks a 4MP Ultrapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture.
Running Android 6.0 Marshmallow based MIUI 7.0 operating system, the device pack in a 3000mah battery that supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. On the connectivity front, the handset includes 4G as well as 4G advanced CAT 12 LTE supporting speeds of up to 600mbps, still it is in theoretical, though. VoLTE is also included. NFC is now also smarter with card virtualization and write mode. Last, but not least, the handset features a fingerprint scanner, embedded over the home button, the first one from Xiaomi to sport the scanner.

The phone will be available in China starting March 1, and the pre-orders for the phone are currently up over there. However, there’s no word on when or if the phone will be available outside China.
