Speculations were rife on who is going to be the General Secretary of AIADMK party where several unofficial reports suggested ‘Chinnamma’ Sasikala Natarajan would be elected as the new Party Chief. It is now official! Sasikala as Chinamma is now the new General Secretary of AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam).
At the AIADMK annual general body meeting held at Chennai today, the party members, ministers and MLAs, and Chief Minister O Panneerselvam have decided to elect Chinnamma Sasikala as the party chief and handover all the reins of the party to her. It was a high-profile meeting that took place at the Srivaru Kalyana Mandapam in Vanagaram, Chennai had senior ministers including Chief Minister O Panneerselvam.
After the death of Amma Jayalalithaa earlier this month, there was a fierce fight for the power of both the party and the administration of the state. O Panneerselvam was elected as the Chief Minister on the day of Amma death; however, the party supremo position was vacant until now. Previously, several ministers and party members extended their support in fervor of Chinnamma Sasikala, who was the long time friend and associate of Jayalalithaa.
On January 2, Ms Natarajan, 54, will formally take over as AIADMK general secretary, a post held by Ms Jayalalithaa till she died on December 5. On cue, posters of Ms Jayalalithaa presenting flowers to Ms Natarajan came up around the party office, celebrating the transition from “Amma” to “Chinamma (mother’s younger sister)”.
“Like we saw MGR (MG Ramachandran) in Jayalalithaa, we see Jayalalithaa in Sasikala,” said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam. MGR, a former Chief Minister and Jayalalithaa’s co-star in many films, was the founder of AIADMK.
Though, Sasikala was not technically qualified for the post, as the general secretary has to serve the party at least for complete 5 years. While Jayalalithaa was in power, she kept Sasikala and her family members away from the party and cancelled their membership as well. But, power and money have changed everything and that dominated again in the history. Using her influence, she made everyone who were loyalist to Amma to support her and emerged into power as Chinnamma.
Besides adopting a resolution to work under the leadership of Sasikala Natarajan, the AIADMK also passed 14 resolutions including one that Jayalalithaa’s birthday be celebrated as ‘National Farmers Day’. Further, the party has demanded that Amma be conferred with the Magsaysay Award and Nobel prize for World Peace.
